There were four rap acts that were the targets of censors and, at times, the FBI:
The Geto Boys
And 2 Live Crew.
2 Live Crew's album As Nasty As We Wanna Be was declared obscene and banned in Florida, a ruling which was eventually overturned. However, like most bans, the effort only stoked sales nationwide as everybody wanted to know exactly what it was that could be so bad. They were also sued by Acuff-Rose for an unauthorized use of a sampled of Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman", but there track "Pretty Woman" was ruled a parody, which fell under fair use.
2 Live Crew has been cited as an influence by, has had their tracks sampled and covered by, or have individually collaborated with Kid Rock, Ludacris, 8Ball & MJG, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Lil Jon, Juvenile, Lil' Kim, Geto Boys, Naughty By Nature, Master P, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Ja Rule, Pitbull, Plies, Three 6 Mafia, Luniz, Rick Ross, DJ Screw, Trick Daddy, Lil Scrappy, Kool Keith, Bloodhound Gang, Crystal Method, C-Murder, Ying Yang Twins, H-Town, Tag Team, Young Buck, Dem Franchize Boyz, Kid 'N Play, YoungbloodZ, Shop Boyz, Trillville, 95 South, Too Much Joy, Fergie, Ol' Dirty Bastard of the Wu-Tang Clan, Big Mike of the Geto Boys, Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child, Cash Money Millionaires, Girl Talk and 69 Boyz, among many others.
They are currently ranked #511 on my list of the most worthy acts based on influence eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
There were three members: Luther Campbell, formerly Luke Skywalker until Lucas Films sued, Brother Marquis and Kid Fresh Ice.
Kid Fresh Ice, born Chris Wong Won, was of Chinese and Trinidadian decent, making him the first major rapper of any Asian descent. He suffered two strokes: one in 2008 and one in 2010. He had released an autobiography just two years ago.
Kid Fresh Ice died 13 Jul 2017 in Miami, Florida at age 53. No cause of death has yet been disclosed. However, KFI was in a hospital for a "medical condition" at his time of death.
